    n160 and 100grn hornady btsp

just bought some n160, been looking thorugh the manuals for these powder but over the years there is a big difference in min and max laods. these are for a .243 and these loads am seeing are coming from the vihtavouri manuals.

    ie. 2002 edition
    100grn bullet N160- min-40.8 grn max 45.3 grn

    2008 edition

    100 grn bullet N160- min-42.7grn max-46.9grn

    2011 edition

    100grn bullet N160- min-34.4grn max-39.8grn

as u can see there is a big difference in these. the latest edition max is below the previous min. is this correct? has anyone any experience in these? would be a great help for somewhere to start.

    its a guideline.
wont be the same for your rifle anyway. they change each time a publication is released
I just took them from the online version

That certainly is good grouping. Would be well pleased to achieve those groups.

Yeah just was not sure. Will start with the most up to date version online. What is that u were using? 34.5 grn of n160?

be aware that this is a load I use for roe in Scotland.
I guestimate that it puts out around 2700fps with a 100gr inter - approx 1600ftlbs

I doubt it would be legal for red etc

I agree with everything you say here, as I've done this comparison of Min./Max. range from earlier and later editions too many times myself. It's downright perplexing and worrying to buy the latest manual, turn to your pet calibre, and find your regular working load is several grains higher than the new tome says the absolute Maximum should be.

The manuals say that pressure testing methods have changed over the years (from PSI to CUP readings), and universal receivers in the lab. have now replaced standard production rifles as test barrels .... so earlier results aren't comparable.

All the same, I find it bewildering to be told that the Max. for a standard 100gr .243 SP is 39.8 grains of N160 when I know that can only be generating about 2750 FPS, so is border-line legal in my rifle. In my Tikka 42.0 to 44.0 grs. N160 gives 2870 FPS to 2990 FPS so I've settled on the best load in between - at the factory nominal 2950 FPS.

This reduction in recommended loadings (and sometimes in velocities too) in the reloading manuals seems to have happened in the factory ammo I've clocked. For instance Remington (R7MM3) 7mm 175gr SPCL - loaded with 70.0 grs gave 2909 FPS in 1989 - the same product only had 65.0 grs to give 2790 in 2008 - same rifle of course, only 20 years later.
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.
