Self catering on the Isle of Lewis

Should anyone be stalking in the Hebrides and looking for some accommodation then be sure to take a look at the website for Dollag's Cottage:

There is no stalking or fishing let with the cottage but visitors can arrange to take a day on many excellent deer forests, salmon rivers and lochs or even just on some local trout lochs depending upon the season. I have just returned and wrote a little blog detailing my fishing exploits this year:

Last year I shot the world's smallest red stag in the area on a most wonderful day on the hill and although the head wasn't large I have it mounted on my wall as a reminder of a wonderful stalking day - a record sized trophy is unlikely in these hills but a day to remember is almost a certainty. Hind stalking in the area can also be dramatic and challenging and I will append a few photos to give a taste of the hills and the sport:

I know, he is a wee stag, but I'd been trying for a while for my first Lewis stag and had decided on that day that I was shooting the first one I saw no matter what. The previous year I got a stalk in to two really very big stags but when we looked over the rise at where they should have been they'd just vanished. We never fully worked out where they'd gone to or how they'd done it and we did the usual scouting around stuff but I never saw them again though I believe they also gave another stalker the slip some days later. Such is the luck of the draw with stalking I guess :-) As it is I'm the proud owner of the smallest red deer trophy on record and the CIC are going to create a new category just for me :-)

I love Lewis and Harris, spent 6 weeks there working a few years ago and have been back a couple of times since. Never stalked or fished there but this post has really wetted my appetite, thanks very much for the info, cottage looks great and very reasonably priced.

It really is a wonderful fishing destination and the stalking is fantastic as well. I would guess that it is probably more famous for its fishing than stalking and it seems to be one of the few places in the UK where when you meet other anglers you are often discussing multiple salmon for a day rather than one or two for a week. However, as with all fishing the water needs to be right. I've been fishing for trout on Lewis for over 20 years now and some years are great and see me catching good bags of big trout whereas other years I work hard for fewer and smaller fish.

There are some famous deer forests as well, lurking in the shadow of fishing fame, with Amhuinnsuidhe or North Harris probably the best known and it is often possible to combine trout (mostly free), salmon (can be very reasonable indeed) and a day or two at stags.

Just a quick note to say that there are revised, and slightly increased, prices for 2013 but anyone booking before 1st November 2012 can book 2013 dates at the current prices.

It was thought this was the best way to implement a price increase on something that people often book months in advance - it saves anyone phoning up only to find that if they had called a day earlier they might have got a slightly reduced price and, clearly, those who have already booked for 2013 will be paying the 2012 rate. It also gives reasonable warning of the increase and allows those considering booking to still take advantage of the old price.
