I almost hate to say it but...

After making sure your kit is all up to the task... experience is the only "standard" solution.

You'll possibly learn... but some never seem to.... good luck. Failing that, maybe buy a winch... or least a good rope and a ratchet puller.

I tend to agree but the real problem is that sometimes you're in before you know it. This year has been exceptional mind you and wet holes are in strange places and wetter than ever

So the investment in the new tyres didn't pay off?

I have thought hard about a winch in a box, with a towbar mount

You can't link to the exact item but scroll down LHS.

(maybe you'd have been better on your quad?)

Section 161 of the Highways Act 1980 (England & Wales) makes it an offence to discharge a firearm within 50 ft of the centre of a highway with vehicular rights without lawful authority or excuse, if as a result a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered.

LOL no it isn't - I was so busy trying to avoid a muck heap I failed to notice a ditch, and being in a fairly rubbish 2 wheel drive in the rain, when my drivers-side wheel began to slip into a ditch I knew it was curtains!
