OK chaps I need to try and form a consensus of opinion on this one (). This tree is a pine, about a foot across. seriously scored as you can see (as are a good number of both pine and spruce of the same size in the surrounding area), some of the scoring goes up to about 5ft, but most is like this. would you say it was Sika or Red? There are reds in this area of scotland regularly seen, but never ever sighted a Sika here, although it is only 3 miles as the crow flies from the nearest location a sika has been seen or shot. Cameras go up tonight, but my money (its a hefty 1 wager) is on sika having moved in.....?

    Hi Muddy Springer,

I bet the deer had some headache after that!
Take a look a the tracks around the tree and it will be easy to tell which species of deer left them behind.

    Regards,
    Glendine.

Difficult to tell for sure, its very thick with needles underfoot and red stags hinds and calves have been all through the area as well. How would you differentiate a sika print?

This is all sika damage to hardwoods. You can see more and better images in the following link.

I would doubt anyone could say for certain what the damage is caused but I would say that if it is 5' and above it is unlikely to be sika. Stags are not particularly tall and to cause that damage would need a bit of weight behind it. That is easier done when the head is lowered and the power is being pushed through the neck downwards, a bit like when they fight. I would guess if it is higher up than that it would take a taller beast. If you have any larch on the ground look for stripping of the bark as well.

    Just my thoughts on it...

Only one tree shows signs high up, rest low down. Can't wait to see what's on film.
