any idea what this might be

photos from a mates farm. he found this roe deer newly dead, still warm and on gralloching said the stomach seemed full of brown liquid, which you can see in gralloch photo. Any ideas?

worryingly, a neighbour has reported another dying/dead roe deer nearby.

Sorry but thats all the info I have so far. any thoughts?Click image for larger version.

Just going to say, what crops are around?

Neeps [turnips to our southern cousins] can be bad before the first frost and as aliS says rape [the plant!]

    Lol

Was the deer emaciated in any way? I've had a few deer this year which have been thin and on deaths door as a result of been stuck in fields with only poor grazing available and now browsing.

Deer was thin but plenty of foodstuff around in nearby woods, brambles etc. not sure about the rape, will ask and get back. Thanks for input.

I had similar with a couple of red stags during the rut, although without anything physically wrong, I put it down to not eating much during the rut, there was nothing to note about any lymph nodes or condition otherwise, so deemed healthy. I dare say not transferable as an explanation seeing as yours was dead when found, mine were shot exhibiting totally healthy normal behaviour.

Johne's disease - results in diarrhea and emaciation... Could explain the brown appearance to the stomach. Just a wild stab in the dark!
