Royal Mail - good news for airgunners and the trade

Royal Mail recently proposed banning the carriage of all guns and their component parts. Royal Mail has decided that it will continue to carry low powered airguns, their components and accessories, imitation firearms, antique firearms and deactivated firearms. From 14th January onwards Royal Mail will also allow the carriage of airgun and airsoft pellets in the post. A revised consultation may take place in 2013 on the carriage of shotguns, rifles and their component parts.

Is this a way of dressing up bad news? In other words, from the perspective of a deer stalker, does this actually say that components and accessories of deer legal rifles will no longer be carried? Or does it just mean that there is no change when it comes to deer legal rifles but that the situation might be revised after consultation in 2013?

Not at all - it is good news in that we batted off a poorly evidenced consultation which related to the carriers exemption and security requirements of section 1&2 firearms only. Royal Mail have the right to consult again and Ofcom listened to BASC and advised RM to cease activity and start over with an evidence based consultation.

We are confident that we can batt off the next consultation as well but I will keep the techincal detail to myself for obvious reasons.
