Thread: Terrano heater only working on max.....any ideas??

Question Terrano heater only working on max.....any ideas??

I've got a 1999 Terrano, and the interior heater has recently (within the last 2 weeks) started only working when on 'maximum'...this isn't a catastrophic fault obviously, but it's a bit of a pain in the a*se not being unable to keep it ticking over on low to keep the windows demisted when the car is full of wet clothes and sopping dogs (as it was yesterday after a very wet day's shooting up in the Lakes!).

The 'slider' still moves, but nothing happens on the lower settings, and then it only works when on 'full'.

Any ideas?? And if it's a garage fix, any idea how much to rectify??

To be able to fix it myself, it really will have to be both ridiculously easy and capable of being performed by an idiot (ie me).....by way of context, I'm a soft-handed office monkey that is quite adept at Excel spreadsheets, but can just about identify an engine when you lift the bonnet and think that if summat can't be fixed with a BFH then it's time to call in a professional.....

    Cheers,

Sounds like the resistor pack (possibly under behind glovebox near the fan ) your fan will

usually work only on the highest speed, because it dos'nt need resisting on high speed.

As you say can be a bit of a pain in the ass !

AS above the resistor pack sounds like it's packed up.
When you put it on the highest speed it normally gets full battery voltage-flat out. When you knock it down to the lower speeds it has to go through a sresistor pack which stepps down the voltage thus reducing the motor speed.

It is normally somwhere near the blower motor because as it's a resistor it gets hot when it's in use so the heater/blower motor is used to cool the resistor pack.

have a look under the dash or glove box to see if you can see the heater box.

about 35 secs in you see him take out the resistor pack small silver box with holes in it.

Cheers guys - that may be an exploratory job for New Year's Day (back to work tomorrow.....)

Wait for the post entitled "......how do you put a dashboard back in a Terrano after you've smashed it out with a BFH??!?!?"
