Thread: Good bullet for a 30.06?

    Good bullet for a 30.06?

Looking to start using my 30.06 a bit more which is generally a 'spare' rifle to my normal 25.06.
I shoot mainly muntjac and roe, several fallow and red, and a few sika. The 30.06 came with a load of 150gr Winchester which will soon all be converted to empty 'fire formed' brass!
I use 115 grain CBT's in the 25.06 and had thought of using 168gr CBT's but suspect they may be a bit excessive on the smaller animals.
Any other bullet suggestions/loads appreciated. I'll be trying H4350 powder to begin with as I have a couple of tubs which my 25.06 didn't like!
    Cheers!

My 30-06 likes 165gr Accubonds with IMR4350. Nice accurate load, not too hot and less meat damage than lighter/faster yet well capabable on a wide selection of quarry.

Hello MS,I prefer to use 165 gr soft point either Hornady or Sierra, they do less meat damage.Have tried SST's but find excessive blood trauma to carcass. Propellant is usually H4350 or vt160.

Very interesting that all replies so far are 165 grainers! My 25.06 also prefers the IMR 4350 so it might be best just to stick with the same powder for both! Less chance of a mistake!
    Cheers, keep them coming!

165 Hornady BTSP Interlock in my .308 are excellent for Muntjac & Roe, won't be so different through a 30-06 I would think except a little faster maybe.

    Doubt you will be dissappointed!

your shooting small deer so up the bullet weight and lower the velocity if you want reduced damage to the best you can. Best load 's going to be like 180 gr sierra gamekings with 50gr of IMR 4350, it will throw a bullet about 2450 fps and it won't pop the munties. It would also be a very smooth load for everything else in the uk like reds and fallow too.

My hunting partner shot a huge muley doe two years back at 200+ yards using this combination, tho I believe he was shooting a few grains more powder. This year he used PPU 165's with the same charge (at about the same distance) and she went down quick.~Muir
