Can I buy a bonesaw blade that will fit an ordinary hacksaw? I cant really justify the expense of purchasing a specialist butchers saw as its only for home use.
Likewise I use a cheap tenon saw that is kept in the car, and or the saw blade on my Leatherman, which I have used on even red deer to split open a carcass.
Hacksaws don't tend to have a very long cut (normally about 12"). Short bladed butcher saws are not very good as you can't get a good long cutting action.
Hacksaw blades tend to have holes whereas butcher blades are secured with pins. I'm sure you could convert one, but for the extra few quid is it worth it? Better to get one that is 'fit for pupose' that you don't have any food hygiene worries about and can chuck in the dishwasher for a good clean. Get a good one and it will last.

I may be wrong (it has been known)
but does a wood ((tenon) saw not cut in the forward direction meaning all mess goes inside the carcass, whereas a bone saw cuts on the reverse action meaning all mess comes outside the carcass?

It does indeed, but I got the impression that the OP was after something for home butchery?
Doesn't really matter which way it cuts once it is skinned out.
