    Minimum Barrel length for .223

Hi, i have a Remington 700 varmint barreled in .223. I am going to have it threaded but feel it will be rather unwieldy with a mod at its current barrel length. How short can i go with the barrel (1 in 12 twist) and not lose anything. i am typically using 50 grain bullets.

    Thanks

    Andy

Just had the barrel on my Rem 700 varmint 223 chopped and rethreaded at 18 inches - not expecting any issues (with 50 to 55gn ammo), but not had a chance to rezero.

It has made a big difference to the way it carries/handles - which is why it got the chop.

Is this a weeness envy thread, or what?

    I don't get it.

    My .223 has a 27 1/2 inch barrel, with about a 1 in 9" twist... it's never been a nuisance to me.

What conditions require a 14.5 inch barrel

I have an AR15 (Rock River Lower with a CMMG Upper) which has has an 8 or 9 inch barrel. The twist is 1 in 7 and I use 55gr FMJs. It has an Eotech 556 holographic sight and shoots about a 2 inch group at 100m...............It is purely a range gun.

14.5 barrel is easy for me to handle whilst lamping from my 4x4 what suits me may not suit others

27 1/2 inch barrel?! Put a bayonet on the end and you can just stab them with it!
