History and stalking, where?

As some of you might rember, I am planning a trip to stalk in the UK. I am also a history 'nut.' Hopefully my trip will be in the next 18 months. I would like to stalk a couple of days, 'history' a couple of days, and stalk some more. I would also like to be relatively close to London. OK, to be honest, I'd like to see Downton Abbey(Highclere Castle), Mid Sommer? and Portwenn (Port Issac, cornwall,) but those are not as important. I want a representative Roe stag. Other than that I care not what I stalk, as 'horns' are not worth the trouble to get back. That said, where would suggest. Once I get, hopefully, some response I will probablly PM you. Thanks, capt david

hi capt d
think you may wish to stay in the south and find a nice buck there lots of pay and stay stalking this way on the history trail it oozzsss out in England try and find a old type estate to shoot there, in the south west /south/south south east /north ?. history we trip over it here. london is ok the tower and all that but its a bit fake, the historys is real but a real hunting est would be a better choice for me coming all this way , if the wife is comeing you may need to book her in london let her have a pocket book full then do an away day for the boys LOL above all enjoy your stay . i would think there are some lads on this site that can find you your buck try a CWD and a munty while your here .

TIZ I AGAIN CD YOU MAY WISH TO PUT IN AN ADD IN THE WANTED SECTION FOR YOU STAY AND BUCK (not stag) sorry had to

I don't know what the stalking is like but I believe both Runnymede and Hastings are in Sussex? How easy/close is London if I take public transportation? Any suggestions on stalkers in that area? capt david

Hi CD,

Hastings is on a main train line in to London so should have no problems there. top tip though... if you can plan your trip then buy your ticket more than 3 weeks(?) in advance and the price is considerably reduced.

personally i would head for the south downs in West Sussex, the views over the Weald valley at day break are breath taking and just so English. sorry but dont know of any stalkers down there as i left the area some years back but the views haunt me!

that said, there are some amazing places away from the main pull (London etc). explore the north you wont be disappointed!

enjoy the planning, enjoy your trip.

Captdavid, are you stuck to public transport? most of the South of England is accessible within a few hours by road, London is best experienced by Train and Underground. Runnymede for my money is worth about 10mins, based on what is still there, but YMMV same with Hastings, nice to drop by for a while but not a day out, although again tastes vary. There are many on this site with stalking within 1-2 hours of London including Sikamalc so put up a specific ad and I'm sure you will be swamped :D Cornwall is 3-5 hours from the London area depending on time of year (Holiday weekends may double that!) and again a car can make things a lot easier. the South of England is a small place with lots to see within very short distances although traffic and slow roads can make it seem larger :D for my money Old Portsmouth, Bath,Windsor are all worth a day out, and I'm sure others will have suggestions as well.

Is it history or archaeology/prehistory you are interested in? If you like the prehistory thing and are going to be based in the south then I guess Stonehenge and Avebury have to be worth a visit as they are probably the most famous prehistory sites in the UK, if not the world.

If it is history in the more recent sense then to be honest just reading up a little and walking around London will give you more history than you can take in a lifetime. There are people in London with carpet older than your country so with the right reference book you will not walk far before discovering something of interest. I'd guess there are probably companies who run "history tours" of London and that might help maximise your visit? Or you could read something like Samuel Pepys before you come and visit the area? The options in London are almost boundless and the only problem is that it is often staring you in the face if only you had the info to hand.

The Cotswolds can be nice for the quaint villages and pubs, I was in a pub in the Cotswolds last week and the fireplace was dated 1670. Again it isn't so much a case of finding the history as in getting info to allow you to appreciate what you are seeing.

I'm more into History from the Normans through the Tudors and Stewarts, but might visit something earlier. capt david

"There are people in London with carpet older than your country ":rofl:

my old mums laid down in one of the oldest norman churches in the uk in a village call Great Wakering Essex but that is all thats there (not her the church silly) so not a day out

History, is where one finds it. With a couple of exceptions our history in Texas began about 300 years ago over a huge state. British history began about 7 times that ago on a rather small group of islands. As a history teacher we define history as a time with written records. I suppose that I should find the best place to stalk and discover the history around it. I do plan spending two days in London at some time during my stay with at least a half day, probably more, at the British Museum. I did take a tourist tour of london in '69 and '71 but don't remember much.I'll probably take another to see if there is anything that I might want to spend more time seeing. capt david

Britain is full of history, wherever you go there will be things worth seeing. Its also a small place so things are a lot closer together than they will be in texas!

Within 30 miles of my house there are several stately homes, quite a few castles, smugglers caves, mining museum, a distillery, and an Iron age Broch, and loads of other stuff. Go to another part of the UK and it will be similar...

Why not get the train up to Northumberland for two or three days.

You could book in with roe stalker (Jon Snowdon) .... Plenty of roe buck stalking, he has accommodation which is 5 miles from Hadrians wall; all the roman forts are accessible. You could visit Alnwick castle (where Harry potter and robin hood were filmed), lindisfarne.... The county (the quiet county as it is known) has more castles than any other in England.

You can't come across to the uk and only spend time with the shandy drinkers!

The British Museum is superb, but I can't see how anyone could "do" London in just two days, I lived there for 20 years and still missed most of it.

Only ever been for work... so I can't comment on the tourist side but I find it a very hard place to be for more than an hour or two. I feels like a different country all together; friends who have, and do, live there think it has more in common with New York than it does with the rest of the uk. But hey I'm a bumpkin , also probably neither the thread or the site for this comment.

I went to the science museum in London last year I stayed for 4 hours before being dragged off by the Sikadog clan I could have stayed for 4 days, absolutely gobsmacked.
If you want to go further north you could try Chester we have more Roman History than Rome, and the only 2 layer main street shops in the UK.

How about a trip to Leeds armoury if you're up north? Most of the kit from the Tower of London went there. They do weapons displays hawking and jousting and of course the firearms display section.
