it worked and very shortly i found the skin it was hid behind a tree

my owner was ever so pleased he gave me some titbits he had laid on top of the skin, can,t wait for the next session in a week or so i heard him say, o well untill then bye

Well done sikka. My owner gave me a tit bit, but I prefered to just rag the skin....I'm a paterdale!!

Well done Sika! Hopefully I will get to meet you and your master soon. Its great to hear from novice stalkers both the four and the two legged variety.

Sika have you considered making a deer dog diary for the web site? I'm sure that we would all be very interested in your progress and exploits.

i think this is my owners plans beowulf
but he has only trained shooting dogs before so this is new to us both, will keep all posted and who knows with all the advice there hopefully will be posted he might even train me aswell as i train him
hi to all the other stalking dogs

Sika it sounds like a plan! I too am hoping to do some more writing this year. I don't think that being an expert on a subject is required for what we are both doing. If we were writing about Astro-physics we may be expected to be qualified in the subject. With our prefered subject we can fall back on the fact that this is an open forum and we have the passion to 'wing it'. I think you will do just fine, your dad I'm sure will help you out. If it all goes wrong just blame him!

Well done Sika

Now get your owner to buy a special collar just for finding deer and make him put it on you just before training. This will help imprint the difference between work and play.

hi mark
already on to that the ,other half is phoning bushwear in the morning for a reflective collar see following good advice :lol:
had to make sure she was into deer first as my last spaniel was'nt but made a good bird dog instead

here is an update on sika's training
sika is nearly 6 months and is walking to hael on the lead and now sits on command at short distances only, also will sit and stay for several minutes
P1010688.jpg

i hav extended the distance she has to track over to about 100yards, and hav put in atleasts to different direction changes and put some long curves in where before they were straight , aswell as going in between trees so she has to smell her way to the deer instead of looking towards a tree and thinking it is behind it
P1010696.jpg

once sika has found the skin(roe in this case)i give her loads of fuss and then make her sit and stay while i play with the skin to so she gets used to me gralloching while she waits patiently, then i give her a little treat as a reward but to day i then gave her another task a second track about 20yards from the roe skin to wich she found a doddle and did not care it was a different smell or a real deer

tracking over for another week
one happy sika

following on with sika's progress she is being walked amongst the game birds to steady her up and prevent her chasing them instead of doing the job she is being trained for, as most of her scent trails are layed amongst where the game birds walk and feed to help keep her interested in the deer not game so far so good the deer trails come first.
along with scent trails sika is also undertaking dummy work and water work for when the deer training is fully installed and she is competent in knowing the difference from which comes first (deer i hope)as she will be introduced to the world of game shooting at about 2-3 years of age unless i think different
i would appreciate any veiws as would some others that are watching sika's progress
many thanks stone

tonite sika had her first introduction to main road traffic
sika and thistle our other lab puppy(picking up dog only) were walked around the main roads for the first time so they could get used to the traffic and interact with strangers and other dogs as i think socialising plays a big part in a dogs life to help prevent nervousness , both dogs did extremely well and will soon learn to sit at the road side and wait for the traffic to be clear before crossing, road sense could save a lot of heart ache and vet bills

sika
is now nearly 8 months old, she is walking to heel off the lead and sits and stays on command although she only in the stay position for upto 5mins but i am gradualy extending this week by week her longest blood trail to date is about 300 yards approx ,but i am sure she is capable of a lot longer
at the moment she is being introduced to gun fire and how i am doing this
started of with moderated 22, then took the moderator off and sat her 20 yards back while some one else fired the 22 while i reasured sika
i will start shooting a rew rabbits over her then if everthing is fine we will venture out on our first deer stalk to get her accustomed to the deer
