    6.5-06

Need opinions from the 6.5 brigade on the 6.5-06.after my recent thread 6.5-284 I would like to hear your thoughts,25-06 to 6.5-06 looks the easier or more practical calibre change, the ballistics are impressive, not sure on how many shots the barrel will do,any info would be great, regards swarovski

Can't see the point in a wildcat that might do 100fps better than a hand loaded 6.5x55.

I would go with a 25/06 or (God forbid), a 270 if I wanted to go with the '06 case.
    Brian.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

I had a 6.5-06 that was built on a 98 action with a Shilen #3 1-9 carbon steel barrel that shot wonderfully . It was built by a friend that used to run his own shop called Hawkbill Custom Rifle's . He now works out of the shop I sell out of .

The rifle I had with the Hornady 129 SST and a good charge of H4831 SSC would keep 3 in 1/2 MOA . I hunted it one season , pointed it at 4 deer , squeezed the trigger four times and killed four deer .

To be honest it was just to easy !

Load work was easy , the gun was easy to shoot and every time I fired it at a deer the animal died PDQ !

I made all my brass from 25-06 brass .

And I gotta admit I'd like another one on a Remington 700 or Ruger #1 action !

As to the other 06 cases I keep 25-06's , 270's , 280's and 06's in the safe all the time and I see no reason in knocking the 6.5-06 just because it's a so called wildcat !

If I'm not mistaken A-Square legitimized the round about the same time they legitimized the 338-06 . Now there's another one I like a good bit as well !

Frankly I'd be more then happy if I had to go the rest of my days with a 6.5-06 and a 338-06 for everything I could or would hunt !

I think you're trying to get the impossible here. If you want the best tool for each job, you need to get at least two rifles.

If the 260 rem,6.5-55 just to name a couple that are good out to 1000yds then the 6.5-06 with better ballistics should be even better,I think the 6.5-06 has better ballistics than the 6.5-284.

I've seen a 6.5-06, but not fired it. The one comment I would make about these less common calibres is that the cost of dies is eye watering and the dies really need to be matched to the reamer used to chamber the rifle. Would you get a pair of matched reamers to cut your chamber and dies? Have you considered 7mm options? A 284 Win always seems to attract me as an option for another rifle I don't really need.

    Regards JCS

68 for die set,so I hear its a very underrated cartridge, have never had any probs getting accuracy from the rcbs dies

Now I spoke to someone with a 6.5-06 just this week, forget who.
He seemed to think it was one of very few in the UK.

I think it sounds like a cracking round. but then I like the 270 and its parent case.

all the high BC 6.5mm bullets on offer at 270 velocities
(what I find interesting is books loads for 100+gr 25-06 are slower than 130gr .270 loads! and a lot lower than 100gr .270 book loads!)
don't see why barrel life would be any worse than either of those two or the 6.5-284.
