Deer hide in freezer can it be tanned

    Hi all,

Ive had a deer hide in the freezer for a while as wanted to get it tanned one day.

It still looks good but I'm wondering if by throwing it in a bag and then freezing it has damaged it and prevented it from being tanned and turned into a rugborvwall hanging.

Can someone please advise and also recommend a tanners in the south. I'm based in north hampshire.

    many thanks

Devonia down at Buckfastleigh on Dartmoor are the only commercial tannery I know of.
Ring them and ask what treatment will be needed, after defrosting, before you send it to them.

To send skins to them, bag skins in heavy duty polythene builders rubble bags, seal the bags with gaffa tape, brown paper wrap the parcel and send it Royal Mail.
Mine got there next day and the postage didn't cost the earth

There are tanneries all over that will do deer skins

Why not do it yourself though?

    Hi

thanks for the responses. Will look up Devonia tomorrow and give them a call.

Saddler your question is a good one. It's something I'd love to learn and a skill worthy if any outdoorsman /hunter. If you are able to point me in the direction of some simple and "Robbo" proof instructions I'd love to learn.

Alternatively if there's anybody nearby who's willing to show me the steps please do get in touch.

    All the best

Well Devonia turned out to be a great tip (thank u Archer).

I had a very friendly and helpful email back from Devonia along with preperation instructions before shipment to them.

Hide now defrosting in the garage and bags of salt at the ready......

Turns out that a skin should ideally be salted within hours (prefferably) of being skinned. Freezing does not kill the bacteria in the hide that can do damage and eat away at the cellular structure of the hide which can reduce the quality of the finished rug/cover/skin.

I will salt over the next few days and ship it off for tanning.

Can I also say that although I've not shipped around I was very surprised at how cheap their prices are. In times were ten pound notes don't go far... They only want a couple!

will feed back when I have the returned product.

    Robbo,

Out of curiosity, what sort of money did they want to do the skin?

    Regards,

Have you got the skins back yet?

had a few done at devonia myself got a winter roe that is stunning but my last fallow for some reason they trimmed it to shape which in my mind spoiled it, saying that it sat in my shed after salting it twice for four months before I dropped it off so it could have been due to hair slippage around the edges.
