What to do with 'General'?

I think the general section has degenerated so far from what it used to be its mostly full of sh*te now...

If you wana talk rubbish theres facebook or plenty of fish etc

For all the sado's that live on here i couldnt personally care what youve had for brekky or if the toasters broke.

Generals become like cheap tv imo

Cheesy grins

I agree with you (and I generally talk crap as the long haired general is at pains to point out)
but there is still the same percentage of crap as there has always been its just there are 10,000 members now so it is more apparent.
This has gone from a small web site for deer stalking to one of the best subscribed to stalking sites with members from many countries dropping by regularly.
It is not the local pub anymore its bigger than that and that is to the credit of the owners and admin, they are trying to put back and support the next generation of stalkers with the bursary.
But you know all this, you just need to look at the good and ignore the dross life's too short to get wound up about what you can't change.
But as I am over 45 now I do like a good moan so crack on :D
Ps I had steak for tea, sorry dinner went northern for a moment:doh: northern monkey moved south.

You can already do this... click What's New at the top, then click New Posts (excl. Classifieds) just underneath

Thanks, Alex. Found this and tried it to be greeted with the message .....

Sorry, there are no new posts to view.

You may search for posts updated during the previous 24 hours here

I'm not sure this works in exactly the same way as 'Quick Links' then 'Today's Posts' but you know best. However, when I did click on the 'here' I still got covered in a nasty rash of Sale Ads ....... aaaaaargh.

Also .... 'No new posts' seemed unlikely as I clear cache constantly. Does the site use session cookies or something?

Nice reply bud :)

Alex - you're doing an ace job - I think you're right in wanting to get the forum back on track.
Can I suggest that you, John & Malc decide what you as forum owners want the forum to be & get a bit draconian by deleting what you think to be inappropriate or stuff posted in the wrong section and sending the originator a PM to tell them what they've done wrong, rather than moving it in a gentle fashion as you do now.
Maybe that will get rid of some of the dross which pees so many of us off!
There is nowt wrong with a conscientious dictator!

Thanks for the input everyone. Probably won't do anything drastic this week, maybe look at doing the week after. I'm hoping for a software update from vBulletin soon so might wait for that and do that changes at the same time.

I think having the two training areas is a waist of time Alex no one knows were to put there post.

Really? Even though splitting adverts out is consistent across the site?

You'd prefer all the training discussion to be mixed in with all the adverts for training courses? I just can't see it....

Morning,

If there is no 'General' section at all, member are almost 'forced' to find a section suitable to their thread.

Another suggestion I would like to make, is the possibility of an additional 'advanced' search function by searching for all words if put in between inverted commas eg., or a 'minus sign' if one does not want to include a certain word. A bit like the Google search functions.

Cheers

At the moment as I understand it, the "Post New Thread" button is displayed at the top of each forum or sub-section and when you click on it you are able to start a new Thread in that forum (i.e. f=8 for General).

Would it be possible to turn it round, so that when you get to the New Thread page the user is presented with an additional Select Box (or possibly two depending on how you want to handle sub-forums) showing the forums that they can add their thread to, which must then be selected.

So something similar to the "Search in Forum(s): " section on the search page:

Although obviously display it as a single row Select Box.

Obviously a lot of time is spent re-filing posts, but if the majority of the re-filing is moving them out of General, you could still honour and pre-select the value of 'f' for all forums other than 'General' in which case nothing is pre-selected in the new Select Box.

That's an interesting idea! It would require a bit of customisation but could work in theory. I was thinking maybe a tick box "I agree that if this isn't posted in the right section I will be charged £1.00 moving fee" but your idea is better! ;)

Alex,

would we have a 'traders' section on here please or a section where members can go to see a list of the trade members and what services they offer. for example, my company specialises in firearms restoration and re-finishing, if someone on here wanted their rifle restored, they could go to the Traders section and scroll down the list, or search for 'stock finishing' within the traders section to avoid the endless advice about dousing their stock in chemicals and then blobbing on BLO from Homebase:doh:

...Please..:D

Not so much in general, but could we possiably have a ruling for new comers who's first two posts requesting I want, I want land etc in stead of building up some respect first amongst all and setting off on the right foot.
Again its happened today.

Maybe as a new memebr a contract is read and ticked as to say you have read all the mentioned etc... and for those who appose a quick tick to get on with it will soon show.

I no it's all your own time in up keeping this awesome site and many thanks for this.

Martin

Alex,

would we have a 'traders' section on here

Didn't we have this discussion a short while back? :-|

This isn't really anything to do with General ;) but it's something we are looking into. I was hoping there would be an off-the-shelf mod to do it but not found one so it would probably have to be a custom job.

The way I see it working is that Traders could fill in fields in their profile and it would be reflected in some kind of directory.... but it will be a lot of work....
