Thread: Quietest fox round

    Quietest fox round

Got asked this today, didn't know the answer, thought I'd ask you lot.

    Regards
    Knots

P.S. I take the question to be what is the quietest round suitable to take a fox (which round may or may not be suitable for other things).

.222rem through a good moderator doesn't wake up the countryside.
It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

Excluding a moderated .22rf (which in my humble opinion is not really suited to the job unless you are close, competent and going for head shots) I would say possibly a moderated larger calibre such as a 308. However, assuming you mean a 'normal' moderated centrefire round then probably something like a Hornet or anything which uses a relatively small charge of powder should moderate well and not be excessively loud. I have to say that I'm well impressed with the relatively low report of my .17Rem fitted with a .25 cal Ase Utra S5 mod. Despite the fact that it uses roughly the same amount of powder as my .222 it does seem to my aging ears to be quite a bit quieter when fitted with the same mod for some reason?

+1 on that. A deadly round for long range foxes.

Possibly the .22 Hornet but as I could never take a thread cutter to my Anschutz 1432 I guess I'll never know.

45 ACP in a Delisle Carbine but a bit specialised and close range

To answer this one is easy the moderated .22lr with subsonic bullets. Yes we know it's on the low powered side but for close range, less than 80 yds I have dispatched many an cunning reynard........

    I have 4 rimfires calibres and a .222
I use the same moderator on all of them, a PES T12 Scout

apart from the .22lr shooting subsonic the .222rem (shooting 50gr VMax with 22.2gr N133) is quieter than the .22WMR, .17HMR and .17Mach2

although no fox has ever complained about the noise!
