Navaras of that age have major engine problems, check the Nissan forums if you can pay a little more and buy a hilux

you will do better mpg (32-38) with one of this age rather than the newer versions (22-28) late 07 onwards.
the space and comfort is better than the L200 shitsubishis and L/r defenders so stick with it don't be persuaded otherwise.
had them all and that was my experience.

This is what Nissan say about this:-

"I can advise that your vehicle does come in the range of vehicle that could be affected. Off the 250,000 Nissan D22 Pick-Ups manufactured during the period. Only 2.4% where affected. There is no knowing exactly which vehicle where fitted with the weak bearings.

Prior to the conrod exiting the engine, the driver will notice that there will be a loud knocking sound, from the engine. Where possible, drivers are advised to stop and switch off the engine, and contact your local Nissan dealer.
All cases are handled by Nissan on a case by case basis. Should your vehicle suffer this problem. Please contact your local Nissan dealer, their details can be found using the link below:
To locate your nearest dealer you can use the "dealer locator" at:
    http://www.nissan.co.uk/#tools/find-it
I hope this information has been useful. If there is anything else that you feel we may be able to assist with, please do not hesitate to contact us at Nissan Customer Support
on 08457 669966 or refer to our website www.nissan.co.uk for further details on any of our vehicles."

I bought a 2006 D22 about 2yrs ago, I budgeted to get the shells done when I bought it, had a specialist in Newcastle do the engine, 500 and its never missed a beat. He said the shell issue is a lottery. Some will be ok and others will pop, just a matter of time. I get 30mpg on a long run, 25mpg just getting around.
