Thats it Grant, getting pics of what looks like tame 'paddock sambar' are certainly not easy to come by without lots of work.

What looks to be a few quiet deer is the opposite, the thick bush cover is only just above them to which they will gallop at the first hint of human sight, sound or smell, they just wont stand around like many other species will do at times and catching them in the open is made easier due to the extended 'dry' we are having. The deer are seeking anything with a hint of green in it atm. No rain for a few months,no Autumn break and we are headed towards winter..life will be tougher this year.

Did the recent fires effect your hunting areas, I can see white grass in the photo so guess it missed that particular area.

Im hoping to get to wonnangatta in 2014 for a go at some sambar if Im lucky enough to get close enough to one.

sinbad that 'white' grass is the remnants of last years long feed that has been scorched all summer,it is the norm for Aus and usually the whole bloody countryside turns from green to brown by early summer unless we have a wet late spring.

The `gatta is a fantastic place and there are always plenty of deer in there for those that are prepared to work hard and high.

    PM sent.
