Thread: .222 groups

    .222 groups

As some of you know, I bought a .222 from a lad on the site.
I have been playing around with it trying to find the most accurate load I possibly can for it . . .I'm starting to see some promising results from the Nosler Balistic Tips over H322 powder . . I'm currently loading a mild charge, so not expecting great velocity, but I prefer accuracy over velocity any day, as a 5000 fps bullet isn't much good if it flies over your quarrys head !!!

A couple of my better groups at 100 yards -
Both around the .6 to .7 so i'm quite happy.

I'm planning to start loading some 52 grain Hornady A - Max in the next few days . . .does anyone have a Hornady manual with the min and max loads please using H322 ?

Not an encouragement to overly push the envelope but I've found the best groups are more often than not close to max rather than moderate charges more appropriate to experimenting with cast bullets as was popular back in the day.

Stick with the H322 and work up from laods available from Hornady web site.

    Cheers

I've also been told that you measure from centre to centre, so even better !

I found that H4198 was a powder that gave me good results in my .222 although now with the price of PPU .222 I don't reload any more.
I was quite surprised at the accuracy of the PPU ammo and gave it a try. I won't consider reloading once my last batch of reloads have gone.

I have three loads I use for mine:

    50gr VMax - 22.2gr N133 (book max is 23.0gr)
52gr AMax - 22.6gr N133 (book max is 23.1gr for some reason higher than 50gr)
60gr Soft Points - 20.8gr N133 (book max is 21.6gr, any higher and groups open right up to 3")

The Amax load is the only one that is anywhere near max load
    they all group around 1/2"

couldn't get PPU to group at all, even went so far as pulling the bullets and working up a 50gr load in Norma brass and they were still over an inch. very short bullets though for the weight

    Hi Ed,

I see N133 is a touch faster burning than H322, what sort of speeds are you achieving with your loads mate?

Do you have any data handy for the 52g A-Max over H322 ?
I'm planning to load some up later this week.

    Regards,

    Cadex
