sierra 243 85grain bthp load data

    hi chaps

thinking of loading this bullet in my 243 has anybody got any tryed and tested load data for this bullet

powder type and how much ????

    OAL you used ????

What fps did you get out your barrel ????

ive worked out i will need to push this a 3000 fps to acheive 1700ilbs to keep it deer legal (england) but my barrel is only 20inch long so would welcome any info to acheive 3000 fps ta.

Hello all again, well i got hold of a chrono and here's the results for the 243 some shockers here! the ft/lbs data came from strelok the chrony is a gamma master chrony which was set up approx 16 feet away from the muzzle-
    65 gr vmax with 40gr varget 3037fps - 1332ft/lbs
    90 gr speer sp 34gr rel15 2657fps - 1411ft/lbs
    85 gr sierra bthp 35.3gr varget 2723fps - 1399ft/lbs
    85 gr sierra bthp 34.7gr H4895 2855fps - 1541ft/lbs

i can't remember the oal off hand but remember just making them the same as federal 85gr bthp the groups i got with both varget and H4895 were excellent my dad uses 41gr of h4350 in his sako with 20" barrel and they are excellent also, i haven't put his over the chrono yet
    hope this helps a bit

37 grains of varget with sierra 85 soft points gives me @3050fps through my finnlight which is a similar length barrel.

The interesting thing is hogdon online show very mild loads starting at 34.3 going up to 36.5 max, The velocity figures they show i certainly don't get in my rifle, however my speer reloading manual shows a starting load of 37.5 and max of 41.5 which i think is actually far more realistic to get you deer legal and run them at a decent speed. That would back up the findings in the list done by reelme

Through my 22" barrelled .243 T3 I had the following results with the Sierra 85 gr HPBT using Norma cases and CCI 200 primers:
    N160 44.0 gr 3,129 fps / 1850 ft. lbs
    N140 37.3 gr 3,036 fps / 1740 ft. lbs
    IMR 4064 38.0 gr 3,107 fps / 1822 ft. lbs
All loads were sub moa and the bullet performed well in the field. The N140 gave the lowest velocity spread but was only just deer legal in England. The IMR load is Sierra's suggested hunting load. I haven't tried it but I think that Varget at around 37 - 38 grains with a 22" barrel would be a good load.
Reelme, your re-loads are quite mild so not surprising that you are not getting the muzzle energy. I think that you will probably struggle to get there with many of the popular bullet / powder combinations even at maximum powder load with such a short barrel. Versatile calibre that the .243 is carefull factory cartridge selection/load development is essential to be deer legal when barrel length is less than 22". I have a similar situation with my 20" .222. Close to maximum loads of selected powders are required to meet the 1000 ft. lb energy threshhold with a 50 grain bullet while friends with longer barrels seem to have a margin to spare.
