    5.6 X 61 Vom Hofe Super Express

Just a long shot (sic) to ask the learned on here about the above calibre. I have been approached by the owner asking me to reload for him as he states ammunition is no longer made for it. All I know is that this Mauser action rifle was made in Germany in 1939 and is in near mint condition and would shoot a 70 gr bullet at speeds >3700 fps. This chap reckons he has the dies and heads - all I need is the weight of powder range to use in this beast.

I did look on the following web page but in order to see the recipes, I need to pay to join their club - any one on here belong to it and be able to fill in the gaps for me?https://www.loaddata.com/members/sea...loading%20Data

Barnes Cartridges of the world lists a few charges based on RWS data soutce.
For 70 grain bullet he says IMR 4895 37 grains, 2800 ft/sec & 1215 ft lb. (A slow light load methinks)
77 grain bullet H870 61 grains, 3460 ft/sec, 2050 ft lb. (gives an indication of where you could start)
    87 grain bullet, IMR 4350 52 grains, 3310 ft/sec, 2110 ft lb.

Some load data in German in the link below(translates ok in Google)

Contact Stag1933 on this forum. He used one extensively in Ireland to great effect. I think I'm right in saying that the bullets are .228?

Yorric, many thanks for your input - very helpful and food for thought. The plan in my head was to get the old girl to push 70 gr heads out around a modest 3500 fps

I think HWH used 5.6 x 57 RWS. The VHSE round is .228" diameter as you say, so bullets will be a problem. Voere made rifles for it, but that's all I know.

I've got loading data for this (Dynamit Nobel 'Wiederladen' manual) using R904 and R907. I've used these in .243 and .270 - so can relate it directly to the U.S & European I've also used rather than extrapolate. PM me if any of this might help.
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

    Zaitsev was correct !
I used the 5.6X61 SE in Ireland for some years during their firearm problem years. I bought mine and dies off Stan Armstrong at Nottingham in the early 70s.
I used to re-load it with Nobel No.0 powder and the 70gr projectiles made by Norma for the Savage Hi-Power which was also .227/8 in diameter.
Most of the Irish guys had the RWS 5.6X57 which fired the 74gr Kegel Spitz .224 dia. bullet. I sometimes used their rifles over there due to ferry nonsense.
This is a large capacity cased beast so be careful.

    HWH.

    PM has been sent.

    HWH.

Sellier&Bellot makes a 70gr .228" bullet in FMJ and SP configurations. It's also for the 5.6x52R (22 Savage Hipower) like the Norma so could be quite frangible. Norma web page is quite lacking, they don't list .228" bullets (only ammo for 22 Savage HP) but it doesn't mean they've quit selling them.

I've stashed some .228" monometal bullets from GS Custom, don't remember the weight and currently they list only 42gr. I'm not aware of other monometals.

GS CUSTOM BULLETS - Specifications for use

Hornady lists 70gr SP but I'd be very careful with it, just like with S&B.

Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Bullets :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: .227 22 CAL
