News - the police want MUCH more money for FAC, SGC and renewals

Just as I thought they were sorting themselves out they come up with this!

The licensing system exists primarily for the benefit of everyone whether they shoot or not, therefore the entire cost should be met from taxation. atb Tim

I'm sure I read somewhere that the actual costs of processing the certificates varied greatly from county to county.
This on top of some pillock of an MSP venting his spleen because he pays more for his TV license than shooters do for their certificates is not good news

How does the licensing system exist for everyone that doesn`t shoot Tim?
I saw some figures on TV last night. The system costs 18 million + while it only brings in 2.5 million (Approx figures)
Is their plan to make shooting less affordable than it already is i wonder?

I'm sorry basil butwe pay our council tax to fund the police as well or that's what the increase on my CTax statement says and why do we need this service other than for big brother to keep tabs on us we don't benefit from it everyone dose, also read this from the other thread it explains the history of licensing a bit .

To quote from thir press release from December 2011
    http://www.nationalgamekeepers.org.u...arms-fees-rise
"The licensing of firearms and shot guns is to keep the public safe. It has no benefit to the licence holder. Licensees have always paid about a third of the overall cost, which is more than their share for a system designed for the public benefit. Governments have accepted that the balance should come from central funds. For the police to argue now that licensing is not a police duty when legislation has required them to undertake it since 1920 is simply extraordinary. Whenever anyone has suggested that a civilian authority could be a more appropriate vehicle for licensing, the police have always insisted on retaining responsibility."

I think theres a question on whether they're allocating the cost of the administration of the licensing scheme, or trying to include the cost of enforcement as well.

IIRC, there has just been a european court ruling that says that a licencing authority can only charge the cost of administering applications, nothing else - I think that was regards soho porn shops, but I would imagine the rule holds true.

I know that Bedfordshire police said in parliamentary evidence that they reckoned it cost them 130 to process a certificate - would be interesting if someone like BASC had put in FOI requests to each of the police authorities to compare their costs?

Personally I think as we chose to have a FAC/SGC we should collectively cover the costs, as long as we get reasonable service levels. No one is forcing us to shoot.

I also think it is wrong people who apply, the police go through all the processes and then refuse a certificate - they then get their money back! Crazy.

Section 161 of the Highways Act 1980 (England & Wales) makes it an offence to discharge a firearm within 50 ft of the centre of a highway with vehicular rights without lawful authority or excuse, if as a result a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about it..

A five year ticket presents good value for money imo.

Especially when you add in the security checks when moving home etc.
