Deer are affected, antibodies show infection and immune response. Not aware of any problems with deformed calves/kids, but they'll just get eaten so we won't know

From what I can understand the only deer species where it may be possible to find affected foetuses would be muntjac.

The disease is caused by biting midges passing the infection to non immune ruminant animals in the middle third of pregnancy. Because red, fallow, sika and CWD rut in the autumn/winter they will not be bitten by midges during the critcal time. Roe rut in the summer, but the delayed implantation (pregnancy) takes place at the same time as the other species. It is therefore possible that a muntjac bred in early summer could be infected by a midge bite in late summer/early autumn and will either produce a dead or unviable fawn or die due to complications. It would be interesting if stalkers of this species were to open the uterus of heavily pregnant muntie does at that time of year to see if anything was going on.

Page 5 of of the Summer 2013 issue of Deer. 66 blood samples collected in 2012 by FC stalkers in eats Anglia. Submitted to DEFRA but no tests carried out, so samples frozen. Once the BDS offered to pay the samples were processed. Tests showed that 70% of Red deer samples and 62% of Fallow were positive. There were no positive results for Roe or Muntjac.
