    Howa 223 and Heavy bullets?

Does anybody shoot a Howa 1500 in 223 and 20" Heavy barrel? They have a 1-12" twist. How do they shoot 69 grain Sierra Matchkings or Lapua Scenar or 70gr Berger VLD's ? Is this easy to do or is it better to stick with 50-62 grain bullets. The max distance on the range is 400 metres. Are these heavy bullets that much better on windy days ?

Stick with the lighter bullets. The Sierras say right on the box that they require a fast twist.~Muir

You may struggle with a 12 twist .

I am on a few days of ordering a 223 and my first Idea was a Remington 700 Tactical or Police. The purpose is to build out a battery of 2/3 rifles wich are the same. Same trigger, safety, bolt, etc.... The 223 is to practise on the range, so weight is of less importace, but I must admit I like light rifles. I hear a lot of good about the howa action : flat bottom, good recoil lug, M16 extractor, 3 position safety, good trigger, .... For a stalking rifle I think of using a cheap Howa as a donation action , one of Edi's light stocks and a Bergara 20" stainless fluted light varmint barrel. I hesitate between a Rem 700 and the Howa. The Rem 223 Tactical has a 20" barrel , 1-9" twist. This rifle I wouldn't change a lot, only the trigger set at about 800 grams.

Hales, you know you want a 308 Howa....just do as you've said above..... i wouldn't worry about the Bergara barrel though....all i did to my Howa was fit Edi's stock and chop the barrel to 20 inches and fit a Timney trigger......it is seriously accurate.....and bomb proof.....cheers
