Hi all,I've been stalking for years now but in the last few months i've had to wear my glasses for stalking. The problem is that they steam up all the time and when its raining forget it,have started to wear a skip cap now when its raining, all it does is make them steam even more. When shooting deer now it seems to take me ages to get focused on the deer with my glasses on so miss some opportunities now which i never did before. Was thinking of contacts but have tried them before and didn't like them but i think i will need to persevere with them.Has anybody had same problem or is it just me

It took me a while to get used to contact lenses but I find looking through a scope or binoculars awkward with glasses and also problems of rain, steaming up and sometimes glare. If you haven't tried them yet daily disposal contact lenses are the most comfortable and any dust etc. accumulated during the day goes with them. Keep a good pair of glasses to hand as a back up just in case of eye irritation. atb Tim

Hi BC.

I have been wearing contacts for about 20 years and would certainly suggest you try and persevere for a while. I use the daily lenses which are very easy to put in / take out and really comfortable to wear.
Give them another go.

I tried wearing glasses while stalking, but the beer kept spilling now I carry a hip flask.

It's all down to you not being used to seeing properly now. Make sure you have changed the diopter on your scope. If you are misting up it means you are exerting too much, slow down. Use an anti mist spray which mimics the coating on your scope etc.

+ 1 for contact lenses.
I been wearing them for over 20 years, after got fed up with glasses steaming up, and not being able to see in the rain!
I use monthly replacement lenses. Put them in first thing in the morning, take them out just before bed. Bloody marvellous!

Admit that fisrt day or two felt like someone had thrown a handful of sand in my eyes, but well worth persevering. Eyes soon adapt, and produce more fluid.

Not all spectacle wearers can use contacts. I wore them fo about 10 years and then the shape of my eye changed and had to revert to specs. Real pain in the rain, fog and when you are puffing on the hill. Keep them clean with a anti mist spray and it will be just about bearable. I have a special anti shatter lenses for safety sake . I would recommend you go to a good independent optician which specialises in contacts - not one of the big chains as all they want to do is sell sell sell .

Are you wearing a face mask? I find that certain of my masks direct my breath up onto the lenses and means I fog up even I'm sitting in a high seat. Try a mesh type if you are.

i stalked in glasses (a real fag) i tried contacts (didn't work for me with my stigmatism) i manned up(i was being a bit of a wimp) and went for laser eye surgery and it's the best thing i've ever done ! (altough it was a serious assult on the wallet)

A friend of mine did this out of vanity and although it corrected her medium range vision she now can't focus on the stars at night, seems a bit of a waste to lose that. Would be interested in others experiences though

my pal wear's bins and or contacts , he coats his bins in rainx stop 1 the rain and 2 misting up same stuff he do's his crash helmit in when he rides his m/bike

i'd certainly never do it for vanity but for shooting (and rugby) it is fabulous ! the stars are fine for me but i do get a little hazeing around headlights at night but i'm told that can be corrected with driving glasses but to be honest its so mild i dont worry ?

Look for a pair of larger than usual frames. Stops getting the rim of an ordinary pair of glasses getting in the way when looking through the scope.
If you wear a face mask and you fog up, change it for a loose veil.
If like me you are short sighted and get contact lenses which are great for distance but usless for close up work. (Try doing a gralloch by feel with a sharp knife) then buy a pair of Tescos special reading glasses for about a fiver. these work for me.

A mate of mine was persuaded to to have the latest artificial replacement lens treatment by Opt*c*l Expr*ss, the result - scar tissue and uncorrectable fixed focus vision in the eye that they operated on.

It has certainly put me off the idea of all these new wonder treatments. atb Tim

I have astigmatism but wear contact lenses when it is raining as looking thru wet glasses is a real pain. These days there are numerous types of contact lenses so I would suggest you get your optician to supply different samples (you get them free) and try them out.

I still wear glasses when it is dry and don't have a problem looking thru bino's with them. But I use Swarovski El's and find them much easier to use than any other bino's I've had.
I still have a problem using a face mask while wearing glasses but found keeping the mask clear of my nose definitely helps with the steaming up issue.

Late reply.

I'm short sighted and can't see the woods without specs.
I've got astigmatism in one eye so contacts are out: the lens would simply rotate.
I've always discussed being a rifle shooter with my optician and described studying small, magnified images of distant outdoor things as being important. I've never bothered with the odd looking contraptions that serious range shooters wear.
Certainly the design of your specs can aggravate or alleviate misting, as can ensuring a free flow of air around the frames. So I've tried balaclavas and net masks and unless I'm head to wind (sorry, that's a sailing term I mean looking upwind) I'm ready to ditch the face cammo by relying on a wide-brimmed hat.
Otherwise I don't shoot when it's lashing it down.

Tikka,

How bad is your astigmatism? Reason I ask, is I have astigmatism in both eyes, but wear soft contact lenses when stalking. I've had lenses for years, originally got them when I was a Bailiff for the E.A as they were a lot safer to wear when dealing with slightly peeved poachers!!

Also I'm short sighted and unlike one of the previous posts I can clearly see which finger I'm slicing into when doing a gralloch!!!!!!
