Thread: Steel target thickness?

    Steel target thickness?

    Morning peeps,

I have a hankering to knock up a steel Roe target. Just wondering what your thoughts are re the ideal type and thickness of the steel?

I'd plan to hang it from a frame so that it will swing and absorb some energy from a hit that way, but there's still going to be an optimum thickness needed.

Got a water jet profiler 200 yards away from work who can cut through a plate in no time.

Any thoughts or links to useful threads that I haven't found will be most helpful and gratefully received.

Owning a gun or knife and not using it, is akin to not sleeping with your girlfriend to keep her neat and tidy for the next bloke.

Eventually it WILL start to bend! My suggestion would be to make a wood or aluminium deer cut out target. Wood is better you can past a facer over it. Cut a three inch hole for the appropriate kill zone. And then in the actual kill zone use a four inch diameter steel disc of some thickness that will ring when you hit it.

As steel targets, to record strikes, used to require a man with a pot of whitewash and a brush to "referesh" the target after each sequence of shots. Just like a shot gun pattern plate.

to save hassle get them to profile your targets out of hardened steel we were using 6mm mild steel out to 500 meters and still going through so it won't last long at all and its a ball ache welding up and patching we used a 10mm hardened steel plate last weekend and all we got was lead splash that wiped off and the bullet bases at the bottom of the targests a quick wipe and a spray with white paint and its good as new it will last forever, atb wayne

forgot to say this was a hanging target and the swing did not stop the bullets going through

12 mm RQT plate is more than adequate.

    8 or 10mm hardox 500 (400 will work to)

armox is good to but tricky to find
    Right where's those stones , I'll start !

Shot peen machinery is built using manganeze steel for its resistance to impact & erosion - like hardox / armox but cheaper. We used to get it from a company in Deeside (Flintshire). It's almost impossible to machine or drill & is extremely dense/heavy - all shaping is normally done by casting, plasma or jet cutting.

10mm should do the job Nick, unless of course your using your bazooka !
