    .223 barrel twist rate

I'm looking at buying my .223 and not sure on barrel twist rate. I was looking at a 1 in 9 or 1 in 8 but if all I'm going to shot is 40-55graim bullets for fox (& occasional vermin) is a high twist necessary or will the standard 1 in 12 but enough?

I don't think shooting 40-55gr will be any worse in 1:9 than 1:12 twist barrel so you might as well have the option. (in fact CZ are standarising their barrel twist rates to 1:9 in all their .223s)

I'm glad I got a fast twist 223 in my Tikka. (1:8) It shoots 50-55grn varmint bullets really well, but I still have to option to load 60+grn for the range.

My first .223 was a 1 in 8 twist , Tikka t3 varmint and very nice too, however I only fox and the rifle was long and heavy for a walkabout rifle so I bought a 85 hunter in 1 in 12 , 20" barrel , lighter by a pound and a bit and as mentioned only shoot foxes mainly under the lamp so 40-53gr are perfect for me as distance are always under 175 yards. If you think you may target shoot /long range vermin then a faster twist may help , however always an excuse for another rifle dedicated to longrange work, nice heavy barrel ,target stock , you can never have too many rifles

Mine is 1:8 and will not shoot anything lighter than a 60 grn v max. Idealy 1:9 is what you want however 1:8 will shoot from 60 up to 80grn.

Speaking from experience if you only plan to do foxing and the occasional range work/plinking the 1/12 twist is more than suitable.

As above,I've had a 1 in8 twist for long range but in the end found I never shot over 250m so never utilised the ability of the 1in8.I found anything below 55gr I would struggle to get good accuracy. As I mostly used the rifle for foxing and plinking down the range when the opportunity of a barrel with a 1in14 twist came up at a cheap price I got it and chambered it in 223ai to shoot 40gr up to 55gr which will do anything out to 300m and 40gr are nice and flat for foxing
If your main use is for foxing and plinking then 1 in 12 will do fine.
    all the best

Picked up a Remmy700 SPS with the standard 1in12 twist this morning, can't wait to get some rounds loaded and see what it can do.
