Hi..i am looking to see what winchester .308 reloaders are using for there home loading..I will be reloading a 180g Nosler B/T or Hornady SST,i have both hornady and nosler reloading books but they have different ideas on the best powder..i have narrowed it down to IMR 4895 or Varget but would appreciate any help in choosing either of these or maybe some other powder shooters have used or using..many thanks.

I have recently tried Ramshot Tac due to the lack of varget and am really pleased with the result, almost cloverleaf stuff :)

Use what you can get a constant and reliable supply of. In the end what matters is that you can walk into a shop and buy more of the same powder once you've worked up a reliable load rather than having to change powder every time your run out.

Sadly th days of reliable supply have gone I fear. We will just have to buy what we can and work with it.

i use n140 and or h4895 but as i dont know what powder you have here are a few more to be getting on with

Accurate arms 2520, readily available cheaper than most and works well. On this occasion ball beats extruded with 168gr in a varmint 1970's sako!

I'm just starting out in the reloading business. I wanted to start out with H4895 because it's versatile in many ways. Couldn't get it, so I bought a tub of Reloder 15 instead. Possibly a bit fast to get the best out of .308 with 180's but it'll push 150's PDQ (2900fps+ for the 150s). Consider this a +1 for both powders - comments about whatever you can get also seconded.

Hi and thanks..quite a few powders to look at and to see what my local gun shop has..i have been told H380 is a good powder and as i use this in my 22/250 i have a couple tubs at hand..will give that a go too as is listed in one of my reloading books.

We found H380 to be accurate but with a bit of a bark at the muzzle. Prior to sound moderators being the must have.

When I first got the .308 I was using H4895. The results were very good, but I was getting a flame thrower effect from the mod.

I only use vhit powders now, N133 OR N140 depending on the bullet weight, both excellent.

N140 is a good go to for .308. Significantly cheaper than the IMR/Rl/Hogdon et al.
TR140 seems to have a following but I've not tried it.
