Thread: How often do you actually stalk?

How often do you actually stalk deer?

I was chatting to a mate about forums and we were discussing what percentage of members actually go out stalking deer/hunting and it got me thinking.

So I thought about a poll just to see (as long as everyone is honest enough with their choices). Also thought it best to keep anon to protect the armchair stalkers, lol!!

So lets see. No need to post replies if you don't want to unless you want to run a sweep with some % guesses!!

    Define "stalk" please.

    For instance do you mean:

    2stalk

verb : to follow (an animal or person that you are hunting or trying to capture) by moving slowly and quietly
: to go through (a place or area) while hunting

Or are you just talking about deer stalking?

I do the former several times a week, the latter may be weeks between, for me.

My ground is 3 hours drive away but I try and get about once a fortnight and make. A 3 day trip of it , may just have picked up some ground 30 mins away as well so fingers crossed I'll be able to get a bit more often

Sorry never thought of that, I mean Deer Stalking with a view to shooting an animal, rather than recon, learning the ground, etc,

    Cheers for pointing that out,

No, I think you still misunderstand me... I "stalk", with a view to killing animals, several times a week... mostly vermin of one sort or another but sometimes animals that are not vermin but are not deer either.

I usually stalk deer only with a view to killing them.

Very rarely do I stalk with a view to anything other than killing... but even this does happen occasionally, e.g. when surveying and photographing numbers of protected species, which one is not permitted to kill.

But you have also said that you do mean just "deer stalking". So, fair enough.

In summer maybe 3 times a week...in winter 1 day a week for deer...most nights in summer for other game and vermin etc...

Whilst looking for a new permission (mine went to another stalker) it's paid stalking with Malcolm.
Working on 4 upwards- his diary permitting- this year.
I can wait for the right permission to come along hence the way I voted

go back 7 years ago until 2 years ago i was doing 280 plus outings per year averaging 100-120 head per year min , now i do less than half that , come down to the question how many deer do i want to kill?

i now do the bare arse minimum to keep land owners happy and give the rest away to friends!

    Discretion assured

At least 5 days a week, sometimes 7, although at times it feels like 8 days a week
