Thread: The Grand Correction

    The Grand Correction

Put this up on the BCUK site at Christmas in the knowledge they love anything that references RM even when less than complementary but have been surprised at the poor appreciation of this wonderfully observed and delivered modern-day folk song.

Listen and tell me truthfully you don't recognise something in there that rings true!

    Cheers

    Just another political effort..

Appreciation dependent on your side of the fence as always.

    Some of it was good..
Blessed be the sheeple for they shall inherit bugger all...

The tune, and the execution of the song are pleasing.

Apart from that, could this just be a trendy 1980's alternative comedian shouting about Mrs Thatcher? No, not really - it's got the self-satisfied smugness, but adds a disagreeable and jarring note of menace.

Well, there sure ain't no point singing about something if you don't beleive in it.

In truth I was more taken with the front end of the song as I too have "got me air rifle .........."

well hmm i liked it and it hit bits and bobs from the times we live in and from the days i was a kid when i would sit down around by the old fishing boats and hear them sing so i enjoyed it, the feller had hart and conviction to bring forth his song of life.

I'm not sure that's true - but I suppose it depends what you mean by 'beleive in it'. As someone who likes singing, I think it can be a good in itself.

This particular song seems to me to start off gently ribbing sort-of self-sufficiency types who have paid off their mortgages (presumably by some underhand and distasteful means such as commerce) and decided to make a rather tokenistic 'grand correction'. By the time it ends, via the evils of mortgage-brokers, Mrs Thatcher (oh, for Heaven's sake!) and privatisation however, the 'grand correction' seems to have turned into a Socialist Workers' Party dream of sinisterly-unspecified retribution.

Here's another from this fellow (of whom I've not heared off before), which would fit into the popular 'armed police' thread:

That's a very fair point given there is no finer instrument than the human voice but still no question in my mind that the most moving performances are those where the technical and god-given delivery is married with not only the content but the artist's belief in the piece.

For me there is no finer demonstration of this than pretty much any of the currently available performances of Gerald Finzi's cantata Dies natalis (1925-39), to words by Thomas Traherne, that celebrates the freshness and wonder of the new-born world in music responsive to every verbal and emotive nuance.

But I digress as such assertions and debate are for a different forum. One perhaps where we are less likely to be called upon to consider the shooting of dogs and the Home Office approach to Police use of firearms.

    Goodnight
