Favourite cartridges and bullets for deer.

Here's my two favourites for deer, on the left a .30-06 with 150 grain interlocks at an MV of about 2900fps and also the 6.5-284 with 140 grain interlocks and an MV of about 2950 fps. They both work well but the 6.5 really excels.

I quite like 180's in the -06 too but the 150's are cheaper and easier to come by, for me.

Vv powders. N140 with 150 grainers in the .30-06... Have tried N550 and got very high MVs but not the same accuracy... as in 3100+ fps and no signs of excessive pressure either... but couldn't get the groups down to anywhere near what the N140 achieves. Tried a few other powders too but just can't get past how well it shoots with Viht. Even the recoil seems really tame.

I also use N160... for 180's in the '06 and the 140's in the 6.5x284

thanks for that I'm using h414 which seems ok been testing a few loads
but I now have some vit 140 that I obtained to try for a new rifle when it
comes so may give that a try nothing ventured and all that
what's your recipe with the vit if you don't mind me asking might save me
some time and trouble and could hit lucky
    regards pete

I wouldn't say that I have a favourite cartridge or bullet as most deer calibre cartridges seem to do the job. One that has worked well for me though is a 150grain .308win Sako hammerhead with a suitable charge of N140 behind it. Another one that worked well in the past was a 150 grain Speer Hot-Cor in .270win once again behind a suitable charge of N140.

It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

Doubt it. My rifle has a 1:10" twist four groove barrel, with plenty leade. I use magnum primers, don't crimp and seat about ten thou off the lands... and less. Chances are my loads would not be good in your rifle. Sorry.

    I only have the one:
    6.5x55mm
    Hornady 140gr SST
    Federal brass
    46.7 grains of N160
    2,660fps
    Attachment 37142
Absolutely lethal. I've tried 120gr BTs and 140gr SPs, but these just do the job better, and that's good enough for me
    Sako 75 6.5x55mm-Z6i 3-18x50. MauserM12 .308-SIII 6-24x50. Beretta 690 III Field 12b.

    interesting

The Swede isnt so slow if you load to the higher spec, most of the American spec is for ex military rifles from war surplus.
