A new knife.....

Gents,

I'm going to treat myself to a new knife(s) for working in the field whilst stalking/general shooting. So it/they will need to be a bit of an all-rounder...or more specialised.

I currently use a Gerber lock-knife for my general stuff (lamping- rabbit gutting etc. as it has a rubber handle and a 4" blade - doesn't stay very sharp for long (Portland steel) Then i use a 3" fixed bladed Buck again with a rubber handle for my main stalking knife.

I know its horses for courses but, i would like to know what you guys are using as I’ve looked at loads of different makes/types and sizes.

Any info appreciated -

Tom

Hi Tom

Something with a brightly coloured handle might be advantageous as ive managed to loose another knife this week..

I like the HELLE knives from Norway but dont like the feeling going home without it..

Try this chap, JES Hand crafted knives. I`ll try and find his website for you.
Jes will make a knife to your specific requirements.

try the FROST range of knives i have two both carbon blades they sharpen up like a razor hold the edge well ,and are cheap to buy. i would love one of those hand made ones but am terrified of looseing one ...neil

I've got two frosts that sit in the LR - they are used to finish off and cleaning up deer - Got a MORA too (bit like the HELLA's) - that's at home in the garage ready for larder work.

(All the lardering kit is DICK) - i believe in buying once!

Its a Field / knife to have on the belt.....hmmmm (scratchy head icon needed!)

buck 110 best knife on the market. buck put a new blade in mine this year for 10 dollars .

including post.

SOG field pup. Great handle, excellent steel, very strong, good design. Whats not to like?

I also recall Chris Howard using some very good knives by CUTCO. Orange handles and a very nice design. He seemed to rate them highly.

I have a friend who makes knives with an edge you can shave with
Any design you want at very reasonable prices and also throws in a custom sheath of your own choosing.
Anything from a working knife to a presentation blade happy to pass on his no. to you

I use a drop point Cutco knife as my main deer knife, backed up with a big Wenger Ranger 66 (not hygiene-compliant as it's a folder but a seriously nice knife all the same).

The Cutco is a hefty beast of a knife with possibly the nicest handle ever made - doesn't matter how messy your gralloching is, it never seems to lose its grip. The blade is good too, able to cope with anything I can throw at it, easy to sharpen and seems to retain a good edge. My only criticism is that the blade rattles against the sheath liner - I binned it and made my own.

Adam.

TERRY!!! lost another knife   I dont believe it

Probably left it in a ditch somewhere's along with a Ford Ranger Crew cab truck

I use a buck zipper,i know some people hate the gut hooks but i would'nt be with out mine i certainly never have any probs with it catching up or anything, blade is strong and holds a good edge.I do have a frost clipper in reserve just in case god forbid i lose the buck.

Hi mate,
just a thought try a chap called Stewart Marsh, he makes knives from scratch, he does the tempering makes the sheaths etc, and a nice bloke to boot as well, he will do you a knife to your own spec.
He is well known world wide, read about him on British Blades he has his own web site to!!!!

Get in touch with Wayne Davies,ie Swingblade, collected one off him, about a year ago, unzipped deer like butter, highly reccomended,Regards Tony.

I am a knife tart, there I admitted it  I just like them

I have loads of buck, gerber and you name its and they are ok. But for not much more money you can have excellent knives that really do work.

Firstly, I would recommend anyone to buy an EKA swingblade, careful there are two sorts with different steels, Wayne Davies has the correct ones. I was given one by my twins, it is my go-to knife.

Secondly, I have a Bill Moran Spyderco, as a friend on here put it, "The handle is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it." The steel is really good though, really good!

Thirdly, The best value knife in the world is the Morakniv 2010. A dishwasher proof sheath and good steel.

All three are outstanding knives that will not let you down, will not cost you a fortune and are flat ground so are easy to re-sharpen.

But there are so many more out there to try............................

Simon
