Thread: New barrel & ammunition performing well !

New barrel & ammunition performing well !

Its always pleasing to find that load which suits your rifle , i have found "the load" first time without really trying , but i did find some vey strange things.

the bullet im using is 185gn lapua mega over vhit N560 , now following lapua load data 60gn N560 (max) produces 2710fps with 24.5" test barrel.

now im looking for 2600fps in my 22" barrel so i start off with 59gn seated 10 thou off the lands , off to the range in the yard and shot 4 shot group in the same hole .

yesterday i go back out to run over the chrony and shot a 5 shot group no rear rest , same accuracy as expected , my readings were 2608 , 2635 , 2665 , 2640 and the last was 2698 fps , with an average of 2646fps , cases have sooty necks so obviously these are running at low pressure with space to run to the max with no problems!

no what i found interesting is how can a 22" barrel with 1gn of powder less, almost perform the same as a 24.5" test barrel with lapua ?

i am quite confident that if i was to load to the max @ 60gn im sure i can get this 185gn slug to almost 2800fps !!!

now another thing i find strange is , usually with load data i find that if you follow the load its usually is going slower than the book speed , but this toime its going faster ?

    all very strange !!!

    ill stop rambling now !!!

From the trend it looks like your barrel is only just beginning to loosen up. Sounds like there is more to come

I don't think you can read too much into your sooty necks. Could it be your brass is beginning to work-harden ? Or is simply rather hard brass. Maybe time to consider annealing or trying virgin stuff.

I suppose it's possible that the chamber was reamed with a very loose neck, but I rather doubt it

You could measure neck OD of fired compared with loaded cartridges to see how much they have had to expand.

Some powders just do this. It takes a while for them to build enough pressure to seal the neck, meanwhile there is blow-by and they don't "burn" cleanly.

It sounds like the Bergara barrel is a near perfect fit to your bullet. Maybe their secret-sauce (lapping the bore before rifling) really works.

And I dare-say the Lapua/VV test barrel has seen a few more rounds than yours, and may be a little looser by now.

And perhaps Lapua/VV are serious people who don't exaggerate, and whose results can be trusted. Unlike some others ...

Whatever, it all sounds very good indeed, hopefully with more to come.
