    Maunder Minimum

It has taken a while as the truth has been obscured a little by hysteria but the rest of the world seems to be finally catching on that we may be entering a Maunder Minimum. The Russians have been touting this idea for a long time now, I seem to remember them talking about it in the early 1990s and they are building new ice breakers and the like and reporting in their newspapers that this is so they are prepared for significant cooling.

What effect will a Maunder Minimum have on our deer populations, distribution and stalking? Can Muntjac and CWD survive a long period of significantly worse weather, both in terms of cooling and also, probably, wind and rain?

Science seems to be suggesting that any such minimum might last for 200 - 300 years and that we could be back to "frost fairs" on the Thames and the like so the impact is likely to be significant. It will also, unfortunately, mean we have much less chance of seeing displays of northern lights.

Interesting. So we may be getting a 'mini ice age'? That is not going to be popular with the Global Warming brigade...

Interesting. There have been five ice ages or glacial periods on earth so far, so it is on the cards there will be a sixth at some time. Not sure how the world's population will cope with the migration needed as the ice sheets graze off a fair few cities etc. The last time there were only a few people around to worry about.

A Maunder Minimum is not an ice age, or anything like it but rather is a reduction in activity on the sun. It happened during the "little ice age" though the Maunder Minimum only lasted until about 1715 whereas the little ice age is generally viewed as having ended around 1850.

Clearly our native deer can survive through it, or at least they could in the conditions on the ground around 1700. However I wonder if CWD and even muntjac can survive it? Also I wonder if the landscape etc. might have changed to make survival more difficult for the native deer? Some have suggested that as well as colder weather it will also get wetter and more windy.
