    Post barrel shortening advice

    Hi,

I have a .308 with a 26" barrel and I am taking the steps of shortening to 20", threading and fitting a modertor.

I am told that this will reduce velocity by about 50 fps per inch so I guess about 300 fps, which is no great shakes as my current load is a light fast 125g BT doing 3165fps.

I want to go up in weight to deal with fallow/sika and the most popular seems to be a 150g bullet with 44g of Varget. Any ideas what this will be doing out of my shorter barrel? Is this load OK for fallow out to 200yds or will I need to change any components?

    Best Regards

    Patrick

Should be no problem i shoot a .260 rem with a 100gr bullet and easily drop fallow out at 200m, Forgot to add it has a 20" barrel.

I get 2650 to 2700 with 44gr varget out of 20 inch Sauer. Seems enough. I would not want to be on the recieving end. Factory loads come out at about 2820 which seems a bit hot to me and snappy on recoil.

I agree that load should be fine , maybe try and substitute with N140 again 44-45 gr. Varget always seems a bit punchier to me .

Just looked through my reloading data . My loads for the .308 are Nosler BT 125gr on 49gr Varget this is a hot punchy load. With no signs of excess pressure The maximum load for this is 50gr of Varget but I,m damned if I could get it in the case
150gr Nosler BT or 150gr Speer Grandslam 44.5gr Varget or 45gr Viht N140 This is a great round not to manic but very accurate and stops deer in a hurry . atb Brough.

Yea I use 49.5g of varget with the Noslers and you are right, they are hot. How do you find them with meat damage done? I think I will load up some 150g SP or BT with Varget and give the shoulder a rest! Cheers

I found damage done by a frantic 125gr Bt can be messy ,I lean towards the 150 gr Grandslam now ,not cheap but a very good bullet . Have you tried the 130 gr polymer tipped Barnes triple x another very good bullet I recovered some from the range and they expand exactly as shown on the website .
