You can buy a similar item from Chas Olsen, it has a longer handle part and is very good quality. I bought a spare one last year, I think it was about £8.99. Very effective and easy to use especially on wriggling dogs!
I ordered a tick key from amazon, will post a review if I ever need to use it

It dose look like there's a bit off pulling going on ,and your right its the rotation that breaks the grip ,with the lifting and the same time .I think I will stick to the O'TomI can't see that it would be as effective as an O'Tom. Just pulling would risk leaving the mouth parts in.
The reason the O'Tom works so well is that as you rotate the tick, the fine hairs which act as barbs are wrapped around the beak/mouth tube and so enable it to be released.
