    Bl00dy Blanket weed!

We've got a serious problem with blanket weed on a lake and spend hours raking the stuff out. We've tried everything to stop/slow it's growth but it's just incredible how fast it grows. I thought I might ask if anybody on here has had any success with control of this wretched stuff?

    Any advice much appreciated!

any channels of any size feeding out of the lake?
If so get a purpose built grate placed over it
If No get down you local fish supplier or Environment Agency Production unit and get yourself 5 Adult Grass carp (or 50 small ones)
easier to get less really big ones as you can remove them and sell them on)

(you may need an introduction license but as it sounds like an enclosed and non flowing lake it shouldn't be a problem

Ripples Online - Fish Grass Carp

we used to add blanket weed to their ponds to feed them!
They eat the stuff all day long and when that is gone they move onto duck weed and other floating weeds

    marvellous animals!

Will small ones (grass carp) fall prey to large ghost carp?

Once over about 4 inches they are safe from other carp, and common (fully scaled) carp are the only variety
to regularly eat other fish, and even then it is mainly fry.
If this is a carp lake that is fished, grass carp will fail to control weed, they may love eating weed, but they love
    normal carp baits more.

Thanks for this. Have a large pond in the garden which is not fished. A friend had some ghost carp they didn't want (some of which are about two feet long) so we chucked them in the pond and as far as I am aware they are doing well. However it is covered with weed.

the trouble with grass carp is as they get older they just change eating habits and revert to normal? fish food so dont clear as much weed, atb doug,

Would straw bails in the water not work ? Pretty sure it reduces the nutrients for the weed to grow

no you can put barley straw in if very small ponds ,we used to put hundreds in every year but never saw any improvement really, just the owner was convinced? its normally for algae growth, the reason it seems to appear is not enough activity in the water in the first place ie no fish and shallow clear water, doug,

We had/have a similar problem with canadian pond weed, covering the pond (or areas of the pond) with black plstic to stop the sunlight getting in will work amd just move the plastic round.
While not ideal it does work.
Spoke to a fish farmer with similar problem he drains his fishing pond when it gets to bad but has all other areas between the tanks (feeder ditches/burns) covered with black bubble wrap to stop weed growth to minimse snails numbers for worms

Like others have said putting barley bales at the burn mouths that feed pond will help with algae but not for weed
