    Game Shooting History

Someone on here is bound to know….when did game shooting really start. I don't mean organised pheasant rearing, but the use of firearms to bring down birds for food. I have a reference for mid 1600s which I thought was a little early.

    Thanks

Earlier than that I think. Fowling pieces were in use in 16th century Europe.

I still shoot game with muzzle loading shotguns a couple times a year, in the traditional way of walked up over pointers. Superb fun, nothing like it. The Shooting Show filmed us in Norfolk last year.

Can't help with the history, but I do remember reading somewhere how there was a flip in moral/sporting attitude when it changed from, only shooting birds on the ground; if they took off they were given best; to only shooting at them once they were in flight.

My understanding is that shooting birds on the wing as opposed to shooting them on the ground was a trend imported from France at the time that flintlocks were introduced and guns became more reliable.
It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

That's the way I shoot pheasants - much simpler like that!

Some of us were discussing this last year and looked up old articles.
This one says the Roman legions brought the pheasant to England.

A lot of you have probably seen this excellent article in The Field, December 2009.
