Thread: Re-barrel or new rifle dilemma?

    Re-barrel or new rifle dilemma?

I've got a sako 75 in 243, it's ok with factory 100 grainers, certainly sub 1" but it really loves 90gn homeloads. I'm no bench rest shooter but I've shot a 5 shot 0.27" group at a 100yds off the pick-up bonnet. I've not chrono'd the loads, but unless they're running at >2,950fps then they would be borderline legal for larger species in England.

A lot of my shooting is fallow so I'm seriously considering going bigger. The question is do I hack a sweet shooting rifle and re-barrel it or sell as is and buy something new? My new caliber choice would prob mean semi-custom route anyway...

dont get rid of that 75 action you will regret it its obvious you like the rifle so get a new barrel im going to get jager sa to put a begara on my 30-06 in a month or two and his quote was very good. As regards to caliber i had a 243 i used on fallow and now i have a 7mm08 and a 30-06, they all look the same in the larder so pick somthing that takes your fancy or stay the same

    +1 on gr1ffer's post...

The Sako 75 action is rock solid and it's argued to be better than the 85. Your Action III can be rebarrelled in 6.5x47 (which is what I'm about to do), 7mm-08 and .308, so take your pick. The work shouldn't cost more than £600/650 all in, and James (Jager SA) is very competitive on pricing.

You get to keep the rifle you like, and "upgrade" the calibre to something you can knock over anything that the UK has to offer
    Sako 75 6.5x55mm-Z6i 3-18x50. MauserM12 .308-SIII 6-24x50. Beretta 690 III Field 12b.

I would say that James could turn that into a 7 x 08 for an awful lot less than £600!
That would be a lovely Fallow rifle.

++1 with all of above - Don't get rid of you 75 action. Get it re-barrelled with a calibre of you're choice. The 7mm-08 is a great round, sweet shooting, flatter than the 308 and just as hard hitting. With a decent barrel and refit you should get great accuracy too.

Keep the 75 action, or I'll have it instead!

Have a 7mm-08 reamer at the ready...built a 6.5x55 2 weeks ago, customer just txt me, it's shooting 1.5" at 300 yards! Get in there you beauty!

Thanks for your thoughts guys. Looks like re-barrel is the way forward :-) Sticking to 260 or 6.5x47 though as the 7mm08 would mean a new mod too...

Well maybe, but 7mm-08 is what all the cool people are using now.
