308 load im sticking with(this time i mean it), one bullet kill all

    Hi Lads

ive tryed all sorts of 308 bullet combos/loads over the years, some good, some not so good, but ive now come to the thinking (at long last) speed doenst kill accuracy does and bullet drop is only a issue if you dont know it !!!!!

so the plan of action was to load a 180 grain sp 308 bullet which would be suitable for deer, boar, goat etc etc ,a one bullet kill all situation then learn the drop then practice and more practice .

i went to see mike norris at brock and norris and as always he was very helpful, i told him my plan and he straight away had the answer that was

    180 grain sierra SPBT
    44 Grains N150
    2.800 OAL
    Laupa case

i loaded 25 up and went and tryed them this afternoon they came out at 2502 fps average, out of a 20 inch standard factory 308 browning xbolt.

this was the first 3 shot group , im leaving it well alone that will do me one bullet kill all success

I suspect that if you zero 2" high at 100yds, you'll be on-ish at 200yds and about 12" low at 300yds.
That, at least, is what my .308 does with 170gr GECO RNSPs doing about 2550fps.

It's useable on the hill, but perhaps not ideal.
At shorter range, though, what more would you need?

most of my stalking shots are under 175 yards any how, so not a issue really

    Exactly!

I wouldn't zero 'on' at 100yds though - waste of point-blank range IMO.
    As you please, however.

It is like the old 180-gr match load for the M14 ( 180 gr SMK with 41.5 gr IMR-4895). Same as a .300 Savage.

    Zero at 25 yards, 2.5 high at 100, zero at 200, 10 inches low at 300 with 2000 fps ( 1,600 ft-lbs ).

    You can sleep tonight.

    Hawke brc calculator makes it...

    1" hight at 100
    3.55" low at 200
    16.92 low at 300

    2.01" High at 100
    1.52" low at 200
    13.88 low at 300
    "Don't say I didnae warn ye !"

    Shooter says roughly the same

    1" high at 100
    2.9" low at 200
    14.2" low at 300

Put cross hair half way up the body on a deer and squeeze trigger. - dead deer - simple.
