Do you mean one of these:

I don't know that it has a name, though "deer strap" or "hanging strap" would probably describe it fairly well.

Doubtless the Germans, with their rich history of hunting, have a word for it - though we should all remember Mark Twain's warning:

Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him till he emerges on the other side of his Atlantic with his verb in his mouth.
Just pop into a saddler with the picture above and ask them to knock one together for you.

Hard to be a cool hunter if you hide your deer in a ruck.

You forgot the gimp ball. seriously though, if you have a strap with a loop that goes over the head rather than the front legs the legs flop to the outside and help keep the cavity away from you.

That got me thinking (no, not the gimp bit).

I figure that rather than a head loop some form of brace might work better than a leather strap.

That way you could control the head and the legs completely and avoid getting blood and guts over yourself - not something you want to do if you're stopping off in McD's for an Egg McMuffin on the way home.

I quickly formulated a design and knocked something together using bits and pieces I had in the larder:

And then tried it out 'in anger' so to speak:

Now I just need to find a chippy who can make one up in 1:1 scale

It looks promising, with the now added advantage that all the goo will drop out of the carcass on the way back to the vehicle!

P.S. I have to admit that I borrowed this idea, or at least the photos of it - anyone who'd like to buy the original can find it here: Plush Deer Puppet Doll - Stone Yellow + Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
