Hi gents just looking for an opinion on optimate scopes , a friend of mine has been offered a package deal on a rifle and it comes with a variable optimate scope , are these any good ? And are they ok in low light ? I've heard the fixed ones are ok...

Save up for something better they are cheap and nasty. O.K. for a rimfire or airgun but not much more.

I had one on my .22-250 for some time and had no issues with it apart from maybe the last 15 minutes or so before dark where images did become a bit obscure. I sold it here on SD and the new owner seemed pretty chuffed.

depends on model and age

older models were japanese glass (lot of cross over between the old Nikko Stirlings)
I have a 10x42 and a 20x42 and they are very good solid units with clear glass

I would avoid the variables though
for the money you could sell it and replace a newer cheap variable with something better quality and fixed (Meopta, S&B etc)

Thanks lads :) I'll pass it on , were it me I'd be going fixed power anyway but he seems to want a variable :/
