    New dog, new owner

Hi, can anyone recommend a good book or two for some light reading for a novice dog owner? We will be getting a bitch at 8 weeks old from a friend who is very close and will help out, but want to do some background reading.

    Get this book.

It explains everything that's important to understand about owning a dog:

Seriously though, what type of dog are you getting? It would help to know the breed.

Thanks Willie, mother is 50/50 springer/labrador, father is all labrador and are both working dogs. I have seen the mother working.

In Defence of Dogs by John Bradshaw. Good sound information despite the "best seller" hype.

Willie, only just clicked your link having just out our other three 'puppies' to bed. It looks like compulsory reading for those times when the little devil gets the better of us. :-))

Here are three books that we've found useful, both regarding dogs in general and labradors in particular:

The Perfect Puppy, by Gwen Bailey: Perfect Puppy: Take Britains Number One Puppy Care Book With You!: Amazon.co.uk: Gwen Bailey: Books

The Working Labrador, by David Hudson: The Working Labrador: Amazon.co.uk: David Hudson: Books

The Labrador Retriever, by Lorna, Countess Howe (out of print, so try to find secondhand....but not here): The Labrador Retriever: Amazon.co.uk: Lorna,Countess Howe, Geoffrey Waring: Books

Although on cockers, not labradors, if you ever find a copy of this book in your travels do buy it as, although I'm biased, it is probably the best dog book I've read: Amazon.co.uk: Customer Reviews: The Cocker Man
