everything I tried I would not recommend! Just don't last long enough.

On a couple of my fav old hats I now rub some Mindel boot wax into them, which works ok.

I now just use good quality gortex clothes.

You could make your own wax. Beeswax, white spirit and boiled linseed oil. Just google it. Very good stuff.

Bob, Fabsil paint on is very good.
It's silicone based so lasts much longer than nikwax and the like.

I tried the Fabsil spray waterproofer on my hat , seems to work OK.

Yes the spray on is ok, but lashings of the pain on variation is much better.

This is what I use, on everything from canvas through to nylon, good enough to water proof jeans.
It also makes a very nice job of wood stocks, from bare wood to oiled finish in an afternoon, gives a lovely
soft satin sheen, and it's water proof to the point that it doesn't dull or water mark.
My mix is and boiled linseed to proper turpentine, with an equal measure of melted bees wax.
Think it works out out 250ml each of the liquids to alb weight of wax.
