Thread: .222 and N140

    .222 and N140

Has anyone any experience of loading .222 with N140? I know it's not on the recommended list and is probably too slow but as I use it in my .243 so I thought it was worth asking. I'm not after mega performance as it's for 100yd foxing on a dedicated night vision set up.
    Any thoughts?

I'd say compare the Vihtavuori reloading data between 222 and 223 and make your decision. I've used N140 in 223 with lighter bullet weights than published. I'd use 55gr SP in your application. Muzzle report will be a little louder, or alternatively you'll stress the moderator a bit more.

Thanks for that. I was looking at the data in Norman Clarkes the other day and the lad I was talking to said that N140 was ok for .223 as the case was a bit larger. If it means a compressed load that's probably not for me as I intend to use a lee classic loader and the thought of compressing powder with a hammer is not appealing
Stressing the moderator isn't a problem as I'm using my .243 mod on it.

N140 is way too slow for the .223 (apart from 69gr Match upwards), and really no use at all in the .222.

I have both cals, and use N135 in .223 at a pinch when I can't get N130 or N133. Even with the case FTB the N135 load is a good 200 fps down, and striking lower on the target.
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

Was once told by a chap who knows more about .222 than most
"fill the case with N140 and seat the bullet"
    perfect load!!

personally I have some compressed loads with n133 and am not sure you would see the benefit unless running a long barrel
mine is 20", not great for slower powders

Exactly what I'm doing with the 20 tac and lighter bullets
    most accurate load to date

Thanks for the answers chaps. Looks like I'll forget about reloading for the .222 for now unless I can find some one local who will sell me a bit of the appropriate powder.

I gave my CZ .222 to a friend and load it for him.
    50gr Blitz Sierra, 24.8gr BLC2 , CCI 400 primer in RP brass.
    52gr Speer HP , 24.2gr BLC2 , CCI 400 primer.

Sometimes I use Federal or Sako brass. Due to differing internal case capacities group size can vary but I am talking about one inch or less groups at 100 yards.

Try 40.5 grains of Viht. N140 ignited by a Federal 210 match primer and the 75gr V Max bullet.
I load for two different .243 rifles [ Tikka T3 and CZ. ] , both shoot very well with it.
