Thread: What done it?

    What done it?

This is in my employers garden. Lots of trees to choose from. There is one set of scars that is older and would have gone un noticed if these fresher ones had not grabbed my attention. The damage is down to the wood, deep.

Squirrels. Looks like they've been stripping the bark to reach the sap.

The pic with your boot shows some of the strips remaining attached. Was there any remnants on the ground round about?

Definitely not squirrels, its deer, likely roe. As a tree surgeon I see a lot of squirrel damage, its almost always on the tops of branches higher than 10' where they can feed without having to hang on and feel safe. its rare that it can be seen from the ground, I see it most often on Norway maple but sometimes on other trees.

You can see from the pictures that the strips hang from the top of each gouge suggesting they were made in an upward direction.... has to be deer. if it was a cat sharpening claws (and I wouldn't want to meet that cat unarmed) the strips would hang from the bottom....

Looks like a X-Men problem there , I hazard a guess the wolverine could be the culprit. Not seen that done by roe but I am not saying it isn't ,but that looks like something with claws
