Thread: What is killing these Poplar trees.

  1. #1

What is killing these Poplar trees.

They were topped 2-3 years ago and seemed to sprout new growth and looked fine.
In the spring this year 2 failed to come into leaf, these were the end ones in the row of 12 or so.
I just assumed the winter took them out.Now another 7-8 are going with loss of leaf, hollow bark and oozing of red/brown substance that has hardened. This is through the bark.
The trees are 15-20" diameter at chest height and 25 year old.
    Any ideas please?
I showed the Boss's wifey today, she is not pleased having spent a fortune having them topped and now about to lose them.

The fungus is likely to be Cytospora chrysosperma, a saprophytic fungus (lives on dead wood). Cause of death of the trees is likely to either be shock at being so heavily pruned or infection by a pathogenic fungus following wounding.

The guys with the chainsaw and who ever told them to cut them in half have killed the poplars. As is usual with trees, they've just taken a while to get round to dying.
The initial growth after the topping was a reaction to having their food supply cut off (branches), unfortunately this uses up the last of their carbohydrate stores, which they can't replace due to the lack of canopy.
It might be too late, but a sugar water solution applied round the base of any trees that are still alive may help them.
