    .22-250 Ackley

Hi guys, anybody running one of these and have first hand information/experience of one?

I have one built on a Sako action, this by Calum Ferguson of PRS. Good accurate rifle used mainly for roe & lamping foxes, I load with 36g Vit N140 under 55g Speer s/point. I bought the complete rifle s/hand from a friend, not sure if the AI has much going for it over a standard 22-250, however worth buying to get the PRS build quality.

Cheers Duncan, I was thinking of getting one built by Steve Kershaw but need to save a few quid first. the idea of it running 40 or 53 grainers is pretty appealing

    I have one !

    I's a Ruger #1 with a sainless Lilja barrel of I think #4 contour .

I shot the smallest 3 shot group at 100 yards I've ever fired in my life with this rifle . After deducting the bullet diameter the group was .054" !

The standard 22.250 will push a 53 grn bullet at over 3800 fps - and a 40 grn pill at warp 9...

Do you really need any faster

Ran one for the last 7 years.

This is how it shot last month

    What you want to know?

I had one for 5 years, put about 1200 rounds through it without noticing any loss in of original accuracy and i was using stout loads, 52 grain A max @ 4200fps achieved with a load of Vit 540 was my standard load.
I did play about with speed a bit and managed to drive 36 grain Varmint Grenades @ 4890fps, could not quite make the 5000 fps mark.
In the end i re-barreled to 22BR, less blast, less powder, much more accurate and almost as fast as the standard 22-250.

I had one for a few years, fireforming cases is a pain in the arse and the performance was not that much better than standard. If you want fast and accurate get a 220 Swift, absolutely the best .22 centrefire on the planet.

Thanks for the input guys, I think its just an itch that I will have to scratch. I certainly don't NEED anything that fast no, buuutt....it certainly cant hurt and its just something a bit different that takes my fancy.

Ackleys are an interesting experience. One thing to keep in mind is the cost of dies. Have you looked at .22-243, .22 Middlestead or .22 x 47 Lapua? Have you thought about a faster twist and using higher BC bullets?

    Have fun.
