    260 powders help please

I know there are a few knowledgeable 260 users on here so grateful for any advice (21" barrel on Sako 75).

Just had a rifle re-barrelled in 260 and worked up a first load (as per http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.u...60-load-for-me ) with H414 as I had some in the cupboard and results weren't that impressive. I seemed to get by far the best accuracy at min load of 42.5 grain, but 3 shot group was still c. 1". Velocities were very consistent (+/-3fps across 3 shots) so quite happy that my reloading is at least consistent, but at 42.5gn the velocities were <2,600fps. There were no pressure signs as the loads increased the groups opened out to around the 2" mark.

Looking across a load of forums (mainly US based) H4350 seems to be the powder of choice for 260's, but ringing around this morning it sounds like there is no way I'm going to find a reliable supply in the UK!

The other powder that seems to be recommended by a few is R17, which seems easier to get hold of, but anything else 260 users have had success with? I'd heard that velocities of 2,800 - 2,900 fps are easily achievable with the right powder, so slightly disappointed with 2,600fps, although clearly this is more than enough to knock deer over.

Thoughts / advice / suggestions very gratefully received!

RL 19 is absolutely fantastic in my Sako 85 varmint, with bullets ranging from 120-140 gr. VV N-160 is also good !

+1. Also N165 for 140/142 gr bullets is an option. H4350 and H4831SC both work. Here are some target round velocities from a 24 inch barrel.

Manufacturer Bullet BC Powder Weight Brass Firing Average Std dev
    Hornady 140 Amax 0.585 N165 45.40 Lapua 1 2654 16.1
    Hornady 123 Amax 0.510 N160 44.85 Nosler 1 2858 14.5

NB: My loads in my rifle which is throated long.
    Regards
    JCS

Thanks both. I've managed to "borrow" a small quantity of RL17 so will give that a go (my thinking being shorter barrel that yours JCS, so the marginally faster powder may work as well as the RL19??). Next question - has anyone got a min and max load for RL17 behind a nosler 120gn BT. I've got nothing listed in my manual and can't find anything online... Sorry and thanks!

Re17 is where it is at for me with lighter bullets in the 260. I might go to Re19 for heavier bullets. Powders in the Re22 / N160 range are too slow for my tastes with this cartridge, particularly with a short barrel.

I have load data at home, I think I got it from the Alliant website, I'll check later.
    Brian.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

Reloder 17 must be fairly new in the Alliant line, and this remains a bit of an oddball calibre. There are at least 10 powders for the .260 including plenty of loads for Rel 15 & Rel 19.

The 6.5x55 uses the same powders as the .260. The 6.5 Swedish data is usually conservative (for M38 actions) so this is well worth a look.

You haven't tried the manufacturer's own website BTW .........

If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

260 oddball?? Never heard it called that before!

Yep, tried the Alliant website, and as you say, lots of other loads but nothing for RL17. Nor does it give min/max data either btw - only a recommended "recipe".

What bullets weights are you planning on using and on what Deer ?

I have tried 100grn honaday and found them effective on up to Fallow BUT they did not exit and I swapped to 129Grn SP as I like a good blood trail
