Had one in .308, it was ok but maybe a bit 'agricultural' in feel.

Had one in .243 about 35 years ago. It worked but had some design faults. Safety did NOT lock the bolt in position and it could come open if it caught on anything. Result was it ejected a cartridge without you knowing.
Very agricultural I would say but it was also very very cheap.
traded it in for a Krico.

Delux????? Midland yes, quite familiar with a Midland but can't say I have ever heard of a Midland Delux. Is it possible to polish a turd?

They were the cheapest rifles that Parker Hale produced at one time. A 1903 bolt in a simple receiver designed for the purpose and fitted to one of their very good hammered barrels, all slotted together in an Italian mass produced basic stock. It did the job sort of, but what did you expect for 160 brand new.
It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

You can't polish a turd...but you can role it in glitter

There's no Midland in my 1974 PH catalogue but there is in the 1986 one, although no Midland Deluxe.

Even from the photographs, the finish on the Midland is such that at first glance I mistook the rifle for a bear's arse.

I wonder whether they started producing the Midland when the source of bits and/or the acceptability of the chambering of their previous range of entry-level stalking-rifles, i.e. the sporterised No1s and No4s, failed?

No the Midland was introduced long after the introduction of the Spanish made Mauser actions Dalua. Apparently a source of cheap Springfield 1903 bolts were obtained so Parker Hale then designed a simple receiver that would accept these bolts rather than try to copy the real 1903 receivers that would have pushed up the cost. They sold it under the Midland name which was traditional with the company as the name that entry level guns were sold under.

    I have a .243 midland.
possible yours has been restocked but I am not aware of a deluxe line
that would be a bit like a Lada GTS turbo!

mine has had a full rebuild and if I ever get the bluing done will be going
nothing wrong with it, just have no real use for a .243

New (to me) .243 for an overhaul
